It's a separate window system built around the PostScript language and imaging model. At a minimum, previewing PostScript consists of creating a window and directing PostScript to it. I wrote the original psview (no flames please!) in a day, and the source to it and other programs is provided. NeWS' PostScript implementation is good enough to preview most code you write; previewing machine-generated PostScript sometimes requires editing %%Prolog sections. NeWS doesn't run *under* SunView, it's another window system. But you can run NeWS *over* SunView using `overview`(1), or run SunView tools on top of the NeWS desktop. And if you have a multiple plane group display machine such as a 3/60 or 4/110, you can set up to run both "side-by-side" on the same monitor using `adjacentscreens`(1). (Some day X11/NeWS/View2 will co-exist fully.) See comp.windows.news for more information on NeWS. You could save a lot of paper by typing "executive" to a window system instead of a printer! =S Page, GO Corporation
