With -odb you have to wait until the hourly queue run before your mail is delivered. With -odi, the mail is delivered immediately but uuxqt is held up until delivery is complete. That solves your load average problem. It's the same technique normally used by rnews, but sendmail takes only a tiny fraction of the time.
