  Yes, what you describe is exactly what happens to me.  I don't have any
idea what causes it, but the problem never occurs if both drives are
turned on before the ST.  I guess after recognizing the problem (and screwing
up several disks!), I have just been living with it, but I too would 
appreciate knowing what causes it.
