He could have used .PKA (Phil Katz Archive) format and not interfered with anything existing. Instead he chose ZIP, which has been used for at least two programs, one of which you mentioned does compression. I thought Dean Cooper was working on this, and he has better sense. His archive program produces .DWC files.
