We recently purchased an NEC SilentWriter at work; it seems to be great: -"Looks like" an Apple Laser to the Macintosh -- PostScript, same fonts, seemingly 100% compatible -3 Meg RAM -Two paper trays -Will print on overhead transparency film -AppleTalk, RS-232, RS-422, and parallel (IBM printer style) ports -Emulates HP LaserJet and Diablo 630 (not sure about that number) -more modular construction than Apples -- easier (i.e. cheaper) to overhaul -Built, in typical NEC printer fashion, like a tank -- very solid -1 year warranty (aside: why doesn't Apple have decent warranties?) We've run over 1500 pages through it w/ no trouble. We got it locally for $3400. --Adam
