There ought to be an easier way. Try having the finder rebuild the desktop for you. To do this, eject the disk then re-insert it while holding down the command and option keys [NOTE: there may be a better way to do this, but I don't know what it is]. The finder will pop up an alert asking if you really want to rebuild the desktop on the disk "so-and-so." Just click Yes, and let it hum for a bit.
