I have replied personally to all those whose mail I received, so I will only briefly summarize the answers, rather than give individual thanks here. The problem is that 2048 inodes per cylinder group is the maximum allowed. The solution in my case was to use smaller blocksizes (4096) so I could get 8 cylinders per cylinder group, thus doubling the number of inodes permitted. Again, thanks to all who answered my plea.
