System V. I would like to be able to create X windows on its display, from our 8800 ("maxwell") running 4.3BSD (or any other host, for that matter). No big deal, I hear you cry; use xhost. Alas, I don't have the xhost code for my machine. I tried editing the /etc/X0.hosts file to include maxwell's name (and when that failed, its IP address), but to no avail: xterm'ing from maxwell I still get a xterm: no such display server micon2:0 or xterm: No such display server 128.2.236.158:0 although the X server _is_ running on the workstation. (and yes, I've setenv'ed the DISPLAY on maxwell to micon2:0, the IP address:0, and anything else I can think of) Question: why is this happening? Has any poor soul out there with a system V machine had this problem and solved it? Can anyone suggest any reason for this antisocial behaviour on the part on micon2, or should I trade it in for a Commodore 64 or steam-powered abacus? HELP! This may or may not be a stupid question; however, I have RTFM'ed without success, and a successful answer would make an upcoming demo MUCH happier:-) (please mail rather than posting - I'll summarize responses to the net) Thanks in advance _patrick Patrick Edmond pedmond@cs.cmu.edu Electrical & Computer Engineering Department ...!andrew.cmu.edu!pe09 Carnegie Mellon University ...!cmucspt!a.gp.cs.cmu.edu!pedmond Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15213 (412) 268-5766 --
