My cousin joined an introduction service last week. They interviewed her for an hour and gave her some sheets to fill in. They consisted of likes and dislikes, mostly, although they did ask her questions along the lines of "are you looking for marriage or just a few dates." The kicker, in my opinon, was this: Your profile is available for all members. When you get a phone call from any member, you MUST agree to meet him/her in a "neutral location" like a coffee shop. That's even if you think, from their tone of voice or style/content of the conversation that you might not like him/her. They say that's fair, because some people feel awkward on the phone, and they might be nice in person. [Yeah, and they could be an axe-murderer too].:-) I asked what would happen if you decided you didn't want to have coffee with them, and she said you'd be thrown out of the club. Once you've met, each party fills out an evaluation of the other which gets filed centrally. You can't see the evaluations of yourself. Oh yes, the people running this service are former singles who "perceived a need for such a service". They charge about $100 a year. You can go on hold if you meet somebody nice, and your unused time becomes available for later, in case things don't work out. :-) It's the MUST meet them that bothers me. I argued that you can form a pretty good opinion of somebody over the phone - at least, you can tell for sure if the person at the other end is odd, maybe not if they're nice. Now if that's not about singles.... Oh yes, and the club is NOT in Toronto! :-) -- {uunet!jtsv16,utgpu,yunexus}!geac!cbs (cbs@geac.UUCP) Chris Syed.
