      Mitel makes a chip that will put the modem carrier in an inaudible range
so you could talk and have data communications.  The clincher is that it'll
only work on PBX systems (ie. the phones are connected by wires).  This
obviously wouldn't work for "real" phone calls since phone lines have such a
small bandwidth.
