In Europe and Japan, radar detectors are also illegal. There is a thriving black market in US mfg radar detectors - the foreign transmitters use the same frequencies as US transmitters. Furthermore, it is VERY illegal to do anything to cover/deface your license plates. For a while, it was common to cover your license plate with varnish (just to make it stay clean, officer!) which would give nothing but glare to the camera. It is now basically a felony offense to varnish your license plate in France.
