Manual override is desirable, but it would be nice to get a "best guess" display mode selection. My favorite for EGA use is FASTGIF, which will scroll through pictures, and handles VGA images by dithering. The best monochrome viewer I've seen is GREY. The new VPIC replacement for VGIF doesn't seem to be as good, in my humble opinion. I've been posting GIF stuff to a BBS, I've got 7 viewers, 8-10 utilities, and 8+MB of images to put up (and little time to do it).
