Path: utzoo!utgpu!utstat!jarvis.csri.toronto.edu!mailrus!tut.cis.ohio-state.edu!ucbvax!decwrl!sgi!ciemo@bananapc.SGI.COM From: ciemo@bananapc.SGI.COM (Dave Ciemiewicz) Newsgroups: comp.lang.fortran Subject: Wanted: info on the maximum lengths of identifiers in various FORTRANs Message-ID: <28341@sgi.SGI.COM> Date: 9 Mar 89 18:03:51 GMT Sender: daemon@sgi.SGI.COM Organization: Silicon Graphics, Inc., Mountain View, CA Lines: 19 The FORTRAN 77 standard guarantees identifiers (variable names, function/subroutine names, parameter names) to be unique in the first 6 characters. However, most FORTRAN implementations seem to guarantee uniqueness for greater than 6 characters. For instance, VMS FORTRAN and MIPS FORTRAN (used on the IRIS-4D) guarantee uniqueness to 32 characters. I am interested in knowing the implementation limits for identifiers for various FORTRAN compilers, especially those running on super computers. If desired, I will post results to comp.lang.fortran. Please reply to me directly. Best paths are ciemo@sgi.com or {decwrl, sun, ucbvax}!sgi!ciemo. Thanks!! -- Dave (commonplace) "Boldly going where no one cares to go."
