Neither of the problems you mention have anything whatsoever to do with
"smail".  Both the S5R3.1 (and, presumably, the S5R3.2) "mail" and
"mailx" seem to expect there to be a directory "/usr/mail/:saved"; make
sure that directory exists and, if it doesn't exist, create it (it
probably should have the same ownership and modes as "/usr/mail", but I
don't know for sure).
