Debugging TeX documents is so hard that you don't want to ever make any mistakes if you can help it! 1) New student learning TeX types "1" in a control sequence instead of "l". (I've been caught several times by this one when someone comes to me for help.) 2) Tring to use "\ref" in a footnote or figure caption. (Solution: use "\protect" in front.) 3) Trying to use roman text in math mode. (Solution: put it in an "\hbox".)
