A friend showed me the book _Digital Halftoning_

AMAZING. There are a jillion ways to dither. The best
looking one seemed to be Floyd Steinberg with blue noise
on a rectangular grid. Spectacular. The book is about
$40, but is well worth looking into if you're into 
this kind of stuff.
