I had the same problem with the US version of MS Word and a Dutch dictionary.
So, I phoned the MicroSoft importer in the Netherlands, and was told by one
of their technical persons that the company who made the spellingchecker 
(it wasn't MS!!) could not make the dictionary formats compatible for the
diffferent language versions.  He told me that it would work in MS Word
version 4.0, though.
