They served mostly minis and mainforames, but as personal computers get more powerful and electrostatic plotters get cheaper, you will see more 400dpi plotters. For about 1.5X the cost of a high-end pen plotter, you can buy an electrostatic that will provide several orders of magnitude more speed and greatly improved plot-to-plot reliability.
