Although the instructions don't make this distinction when telling you to connect 2 LocalTalk cables for $100 (or 2 PhoneNet cables for $75), if you are only connecting the LW to one Mac, you can use the direct (ImageWriter II) cable instead. This isn't official, but I've tried and it works, unless someone knows of another reason to use the LocalTalk cables.
