Asking about will NeXT provide "friendly" occasional word-processing:

Well, WriteNow is the friendliest simple word processor I know of for
the Mac. It's the one on NeXT. I prefer it to any other word processor
I've ever used (all 3 of them :-)

Maybe someone else can answer the "power user" half of your question.
(Note that the Mac has a lot of power programs for DTP. I got a demo
of Quark Xpress last night that knocked at least one sock off.)
