well, so much for ever writing a definitive answer to anything.  the
information about a PostScript interpreter that i posted in v7n158
contained a patch for the file "pixwin.c".  unfortunately, that file is
not contained in any of the sources listed.  it can be found however in a
comp.sources.unix archive in volume 15 with the name ps.sun.pch.  my
thanks to Chris Stark of the University of Florida for kindly pointing
this oversight to me.

as a side note, if you go through the gyrations and get all this stuff,
you will also have a working X11 PostScript previewer.
