I use ``batshit'' in an idiosyncratic fashion; in this context, it meant the driver was written in an obscure and not very well-engineered way and that I couldn't come to grips with it in a reasonable amount of time. On the other hand, I really like the hardware and the driver in question does work for the tapes and disks i have tried with it. I had talked with MIPS folks (altho apparently not all the right ones) before posting and will continue talking with them. Several people wrote castigating me for my tasteless comments; I tried replying to all of you but as always, most had reply paths which mapped to 'addressee unknown' errors.
