When I use my SCSI tape the kernel just responds: PANIC: Variable blocks size on dump DMA tape ... and crashes. I could solve this by setting the tape into fixed block, but I do not know how to setup a generic SCSI command with the 386/ix driver. How does the XENIX 2.3.1 aha1540 driver solve the problem.
