It's a cheap solution. ---------- As I remember, the A1000 does not have a hefty enough power supply to reliably (read: eventually not smoke) power more than one external floppy disk drive. That is why the original external disk drive sold with A1000 did not pass thru the power. With the Amiga 2000 I suspect this restriction does not apply and therefore new external drives from Commodore may pass thru the power. If your new drive draws less current on the voltages that matter (+12, +5 ??) then an A1000 MIGHT be able to hack it. My Amy 1000 is now 3 years, 4 months old and still purring.
