I've recently acquired a second-hand modem, and I can't seem to get the bugger to work. Here are the details: The modem: Type: internal half-card. Hayes-compatible. Brand name: Datatronics Speed: 1200 Baud Important features: 10 dip switches labeled 1-10. switches 1, 2, and 10 were on when I got it. The characters 12H05377 are on the switch box, with the 12 part closest to switch 10. A jumper on the lower edge of the card with two positions labeled IRQ4 and IRQ5. When I got it the jumper was set to IRQ4. My system: XT clone, 4/8 megahertz switchable (I've only tested the modem at 8 mh). Phoenix ROM BIOS. EGA card, or no identifiable pedigree (Taiwanese, I'm pretty sure). I/O card, with a unused parallel port, and a mouse in the serial port. The mouse needs to use COM 1. Hard Drive controller. Floppy drive controller. I have enough slot-space so that I should be able to plug the card into any unoccupied slot. The problem: If the modem doesn't keep the system from booting up, which it has done, then the mouse driver won't find my mouse, and any communications program I use hangs my system and I have to do a cold re-boot. I haven't tried playing with the dip switches... I suspect the jumper is to allow one to plug the thing into slot 8. Any help would be very gratefully accepted. Nick Vargish vargish @ umd5.umd.edu
