As far as I know, there is nothing wrong with these files on SIMTEL20.

A more likely explanation for your difficulty is that you may not have
set the correct data type for the FTP file transfer.

SIMTEL20 is a DECsystem-20 (36-bit words).  To retrieve binary files
(such as ARC files), you need to specify a data type of "TYPE L 8".
On most UNIX systems, you can do this by giving the command "tenex" to
your FTP client process.  If you try to specify a binary data type by
saying "bin" -- or if you forget to change the initial default data
type of "ascii" -- you will get garbled files.

So, try FTP'ing the files again, this time being sure to say "tenex"
before transferring anything.
