Really? I would consider it violently unpleasant for ANY program to write to a configuration PROM in any device without an explicit request from the user. You should specifically have to invoke a configuration program, which would get ready to do so and then ask the user "Do you want to make this the permanent configuration of you whatzit?" and wait for confirmation.
