According to Inside Mac, the Item Number 1 if it is a button will be the default, and appropriately have a bold outline. I have constructed my dialogs in this manner, but the buttons still do not get highlighted (though hitting return does cause the Item No. 1 to highlight and be the returned itemHit.) Please reply to me (so the net does not have to see 18 answers to the same naive questions) and I will forward a single response to the net. Thank you very much. David Andrew Segal
