That reminds me of a japanese animated movie (as opposed to "cartoon", which has certain derogatory connoctations) called "Lensman" that was loosely based on the novels by EE "Doc" Smith. There was some computer animation in it that was done, I think, by Rochester Institute of Technology or University of Rochester.
