How remarkable.  What system are you writing that on, pray?  Is it, by
chance, Unix?  Are you writing it on a pdp11, or on some machine that
Unix was ported to later?

Please don't confuse the MSDOS world, where a wretchedly botched processor
and dreadful support software makes machine-specific code inevitable, with
the rest of the world.
