The buffer data and display interpretation are extremely simple: the character symbols of juxtaposed characters in the buffer are displayed juxtaposed in a window, except that any character following a newline is displayed on the next window line and newlines display similarly to a blank or nothing. (Let's assume a window is sufficiently wide to display the longest line, to avoid talking about wrap and such.)
