My roommate's Mega has been performing flawlessly since August, and it has a Chinon DD/DS drive built in. Prior to that he had a 520ST with an external drive and that also had a Chinon mech. I know many people back home (in Connecticut) who have Chinon drives who have never had problems with them. I think you're blowing things a bit out of proportion.
