Well, if the host computer does not see those garbage chars, then the line hits are probably coming fron some house appliance connected on the same 110V line as your ST. My Atari SX212 1200 bauds modem never gave me this trouble, but I upgraded to a 2400 bauds Practical Peripheral modem. And since then, each time my refrigerator starts its electric motor, I get the same kind of local garbage. So just see if one of your appliances is causing the trouble. If it's an appliance belonging to your neighbor, offer him a power spike filter, or buy one for yourself. Good luck. Oh, BTW: if the culprit happens to be your refrigerator, turning it off during the connection might be the simplest solution. However, don't forget to turn it on again (believe me, it does no good to your milk. I made this mistake once).
