I just read the latest copy of MacWorld and in it was a chilling tale.
In Steven Levy's column, he describes a series of events that lead to a 
clandestine meeting with Microsoft chief Bill Gates.  In that hotel room,
Gates reveals to Levy a startling product: A '030 Mac clone that's twice as fast
as the IIx, comes with color, a 60MB hard drive, a 2400bps modem, fax,
Works and Word 4.0 in ROM, 4 MB RAM, monitor, keyboard, and mouse all for,
now get this, one thousand dollars.

Guess who makes this wonder machine?  None other than Big Blue itself.

In addition, this Mac clone is supposed to be shipping April 1.  If this
is a true story (and the article sounded real serious), then Apple is going
to have come up with extremely good reasons why their prices are as high as
they have been.  No one, present company included, will buy even a IIcx at
$5400 if they can get that and more for a mere $1000.
