   I don't think the Quantums would be the noisy ones. I have a Quantum
internal and it is very quiet (mine is a MaxAcess, not LaCie). I also 
wanted to point out that the LaCie external drives won a design award.
So even if it dies, you can display it on your mantel and admire it's
beauty.
