The information I'm given is that only keycodes 8 through 129 are available to me, but the diacriticals are obviously not included in that range. Keycodes are NOT the same as character codes. Keys are labelled with keysyms, and the keysyms are the basis of translation to characters. The simplest way to get diacriticals is to relabel your some of your keys (e.g. using xmodmap) so that diacritical keysyms are somewhere on the keyboard.
