In GNU Emacs 18.50.3 of Wed Aug 17 1988 on rigel (usg-unix-v):

I started my Emacs, then started an RMAIL and a GNUS.  I read some
GNUS, then switched to the RMAIL buffer.  I read my mail, and decided
I wanted to modify some of it, so I intended to type C-x w (widen) and
C-x C-q (toggle read-only).  Instead, I typed C-x C-w (write file).
When I saw my error, I typed control G.  Not realising exactly what
was going on, I continued.  Here's the transcript:

Well, things started getting confused, and my minibuffer prompt became:

	l0{zp~/

And my mode line reads ...]]] , but exit-recursive-edit and
abort-recursive-edit claim "No recursive edit is in progress".

So it looks as though I'll have to start a fresh Emacs.  Not dramatic.
