I read some GNUS, then switched to the RMAIL buffer. I read my mail, and decided I wanted to modify some of it, so I intended to type C-x w (widen) and C-x C-q (toggle read-only). Instead, I typed C-x C-w (write file). When I saw my error, I typed control G. Not realising exactly what was going on, I continued. So it looks as though I'll have to start a fresh Emacs. Not dramatic.
