The changes are obvious. 2) there is (at least) one other bug which I haven't found, causing looping when compressing certain files. I only see it on about 0.3% of the files, so I haven't pinpointed it yet. 3) there appears to be a problem on machines which don't store least significant byte first. At any rate I get different failures on such machines than 386/VAXen.
