    As far as I know, no such project has ever been done for a ][ (pre-gs).
The GS's windowing system works much as you have described yours. You might
want to get the GS Toolbox Reference manual (vol.2 would be sufficient)
and see just how Apple went about the problem.  Obviously the Text Window
routines will be much simpler (and faster) because they won't have to worry
about color, half-byte pixels, etc. etc.
