I am looking for information on fidonet, or pointers to such information.
Some specific questions:

1.  What does fidonet consist of?  What bbs software implements/is
    compatible with fidonet?  On what systems does it run?  Is there a
    Macintosh version?

2.  Is there/Are there fidonet-internet gateways?
