Well, if you have "mh" on your system, then you can use xmh, which is one of the X11 core clients. If you don't have mh (and even if you do), you should definitely check out the Andrew Message System (AMS), which is part of the Andrew system on the X11R3 contrib tape. It's neat stuff. If you happen to have 4 MB Sun 3/50's, you'll want to farm out the "messages" program to your fileserver, though. It's pretty big, and thrashes badly in 4 MB.
