I don't think Apple is claiming ownership of graphical user interfaces; it is simply claiming ownership of the Macintosh graphical user interface. So it is not seeking a stranglehold on a certain kind of computer interface; it is simply seeking a stranglehold on its own implementation of a certain kind of user interface. It has every right to do so.
