I finally tried it on sun386i (gcc v1.33). I followed the directions in the manual for making stage1, 2 and 3 and ran cmp $file stage/$file Byte 5 is different (which is the timestamp -- it makes sense -- I think). I would assume non-coff systems don't contain the timestamp information in the object files. Anyway, the comment in the manual (section 2.10): "Any difference, no matter how innocuous, indicates that the stage 2 compiler has compiled GNU C incorrectly..." isn't really correct, at least for coff.
