The ultimate purpose of this meeting is to develop and publish a consensus paper on the present state-of-the-art of anaerobic treatment technology. In particular the consensus paper will examine the similarities, differences, and appropriate applications of the various anaerobic treatment systems in terms of costs, efficiencies, loading potentials, stability, biomass management, and operation and control. Active researchers are encouraged to apply before June 1, 1989 to participate in one of the four areas (kinetics, reactor systems and start-up, system operation and design fundamentals, and modelling) and to prepare and present a paper, to serve as a referee, or to help formulate the consensus paper. Limiting funding will be made available to selected participants to partially cover expenses. Once the program is developed with participant assignment, a general announcement will be prepared.
