If you want to pay for it, MINIX is not in the public domain. It sometimes appears to be, because a) Prentice-Hall is more concerned with selling Tanenbaum's textbook (which includes the source code) b) because of (a), they allow (encourage) BBS'es, USENET, etc. to distribute upgrades to the code. Some will disagree with me, but I see it as more a hacker's OS than a produciton tool. For more info, archive sites, etc., try comp.os.minix.
