You DO need a phone line (not a phone) to use a modem (even if it's just a phone wire connected to another modem :-) It's been a LONG time since I looked at the AE Pro setup, but there is a (documented) parameter that "sets" AE Pro to "carrier detected" (I can't recall if it's named CONNECT or CARRIER or something of that nature). Anyway, it will allow you to enter terminal mode and "dial" from the keyboard. It's in there among all those menus (somewhere). Probably whichever one sets parity, buad rate and like that.
