I don't know about that question, but I do know that at one time they used the
same back end for different compilers.  microsoft Fortran77 V3.2 was a
three-pass beastie with passes named FOR1, PAS2, PAS3 (if memory serves).
Yes indeed, PAS? were also the back end of their Pascal compiler at that time.
I guess if it saves lotsa man-hours and produces a compiler with less bugs,
they might as well.  I wonder if they still do some of that type of thing ...
your mentioning the FORTRAN banner reminded me of that.
