I see no >CONNECT or OK or anything. Ok! The joke is on me. I finally figured out the problem. I think we can all learn from this. NEVER TRUST A TECHNICIAN TO SET UP *YOUR* SYSTEM! It seems this wimp doesn't know how to set up this thing. I just went through the setup procedure and discovered that he did have the modem set to COM2 but the IRQ was at 4 not 3 as stated in the manual. I just about fell off my chair. He also never activated the serial port on the rear. I didn't want to go near the setup procedure in case I messed it up. I have since learned not to have faith in those who should know what they are doing. I also discovered that the printer was set to LPT1 with an IRQ of 5 and not 7 as was recommended in the manual.
