Try Apple's CloseView.  It's part of the most recent couple of System Tools
(6.0 and newer, I think).

The CloseView CDEV does more than magnification.  You can leave the
magnification off and turn on only the inverse video feature.

It's maintained by Apple ... so it'll work on your Mac II.  Plus, it's
documented in your Mac's Utilities manual.

Geeze, I sound like a commercial   :-)
