I too have seen these flickering bright lines, although I haven't had the whistle -- yet! :-) I have also had a shimering effect elsewhere on the screen. From my b+w TV meddling, years ago, I recall the line- scanning circuit (of the VDU - analogue stuff) would be the likely culprit, with some sort of component degradation being the cause. When I get a moment, I'll have a peek inside the case (its out of warranty!). You have to know what you're doing though... Up till now, my solution has been to give a gentle 'thwack' to the top of the Mac case, and the problem goes away for a while! (cf. old TV sets!)
